Why Join LBNSI?

LBNSI brings together middle school teachers across Long Beach USD with an expert team of coaches to use evidence to develop customized strategies for improving literacy outcomes for Black, Latino, and low-income students.

Strategy Development

With help from AIR coaches, teams of leaders LBUSD middle schools are developing Change Ideas, or evidence-based strategies that enable progress towards meeting their goals.

Change Ideas, or evidence-based strategies target student needs in literacy learning in a way that is teacher-led, student-centered, and adapted to each teacher's classroom context. AIR coaches and content exterts provide guidance and support so teams can implement and monitor the success of evidence-based strategies in addressing their goals.

Teachers Using
Improvement Science

Teachers in the LBNSI use Plan, Do, Study, Act (PDSA) cycles - an improvement science method - to refine and improve their earlier developed strategies.

PDSA cycles are small-scale iterative testing cycles that identify ways to achieve positive results reliably and at scale. PDSA cycles allow teachers to test their Change Ideas, to see what works best, in what contexts, and for whom.
